The Beginning of Hearthwoods Custom Furnishings

Custom Indoor, outdoor reclaimed wood furniture, flooring, beams, mantles, home accents, wood paneling and more.

History

In 1987, Andrew Brown left his corporate advertising job in New York City. Coming home to the woods of Michigan, he began Hearthwoods Rustic Furnishings. His first driftwood creations were the result of his desire to create furniture using reclaimed wood and discarded materials. Soon builders and developers were calling him to take wood from land cleared for development. He began to take down barns and collect wood from old industrial buildings such as the Studebaker Factory in South Bend. It was while he was working in these old factories that he began collecting vintage industrial machine bases, something for which he had always had an affinity. The mix of the industrial bases with antique reclaimed wood tops made for a stylish eco-friendly creation- a look that 30 years later is just now peeking in popularity. Over the years, Andrew’s furniture designs have evolved into an aesthetic that he calls "Urban Industrial." These custom designs are executed by Hearthwoods’ highly talented craftsmen in our Michigan based workshop. His work has been recognized by numerous national publications such as Architectural Digest, Country Living, and Mountain Living Magazine.
